PA GOP Vice Chair Questions Democrats Record on Women

HARRISBURG, PA – Republican Party of Pennsylvania Vice Chair Joyce Haas released the following statement regarding President Obama’s record on women, in light of recent controversial comments made by Democratic National Committee adviser Hilary Rosen, who claimed that Ann Romney, a mother of five, has “never worked a day in her life”:

“As a woman and a mother, I am highly offended by DNC advisor Hilary Rosen’s deplorable comments. Being a mother is a full-time job, and any claim to the contrary is simply untrue. Quite frankly, these comments speak volumes to the Democrats’ true feelings about America’s hard-working women,” Vice-Chair Haas said.

Regarding President Obama’s record on women, Haas stated the following: “Pennsylvania women care about issues like jobs and the economy, and the reality is that past few years under President Obama have been devastating for women. Since he took office, the number of employed women has decreased by 683,000, and many more women have given up looking for work altogether. What’s more hypocritical is that in President Obama’s White House, women are paid less than men. According to figures from last year, the median salary for female employees on the White House staff is 18 percent less than that of their male counterparts.”

Haas continued: “If there is a war on women in America, it is being waged from the White House.”

I recently attended The Spirit of Lincoln Dinner at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. The speaker was Governor Tim Pawlenty. I was able to sit with the Governor durning dinner and have an interesting discussion about his run for the office of President. It was particularly interesting that it was just the day after the televised FOX Republican Candidates’ Debate. Many people at the event greeted him and commented on his professional showing at the debate.

The dinner was one of the first major Pennsylvania events that a 2012 candidate attended. Last week both Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich attended the National NRA (National Rifle Association) Convention in Pittsburgh. Both were featured speakers at that event.

Allegheny County has the distinction of having more registered Republicans than any other county in the Commonwealth. Even though Pennsylvania’s 2012 primary is not until April, the Commonwealth will play an important role in selecting the GOP candidate as PA has 20 electoral votes. Pennsylvania is designated a swing state that the Republican candidates hope to win. The campaign has officially begun in Pennsylvania. We expect to see many more candidates in the months to come.

After years of reckless spending and increased taxes that shrank Pennsylvania’s economy while growing its debt, voters in the Commonwealth were ready for a major shift in the Governor’s mansion. Governor-elect Tom Corbett took a major step toward delivering this new approach in convening his 400-plus-member gubernatorial transition team this week.

Here’s what the Associated Press had to say: “Corbett on Tuesday characterized the collection of more than 400 business leaders, veterans of past Republican administrations, conservative activists, legislators and even a few Democrats as “a fresh set of eyes” with which the architects of his administration can size up state government and recommend new ways of doing things.”

That should be welcome news to the people of PA.

You can read the entire article here: http://hosted2.ap.org/PAGRE/0a89e7b56b4a4012884cd23a6b24dcc7/Article_2010-11-30-Corbett-Transition/id-cf7c6a7fce6e464ab9a2f5e394a31037

It’s worth noting that Tom is starting out his administration with some experienced Democrats on his team, including Sen. Anthony Williams and Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham.

This is the last week, the final push. Joyce Haas has spent the last 10 months traveling up and down the 77th District, knocking on doors and speaking with voters. All of the effort and energy of this campaign will come together over the next 10 days to decide what sort of representation we will have for the next two years.

If you believe we need new perspective, better solutions, and stronger leadership to bring Pennsylvania back from the high unemployment and $5 BILLION budget deficit left behind by Ed Rendell, then please pledge a few hours of your time to supporting Joyce’s campaign to change Harrisburg.

The Centre County GOP Victory Center is operating a robust voter contact and turnout program. You can help Joyce by volunteering and putting these resources to work on her behalf. For information on how to volunteer, click here: http://centregop.org/events/

The Centre Daily Times asked both candidates running to represent the people of the 77th District to respond to a series of questions. The paper recently published their answers, which can be found here: http://www.centredaily.com/2010/10/13/2268427/jobs-economy-dominant.html

Joyce Haas lays out a platform that rejects the tax-and-spend failures of the last eight years in favor of genuinely business-friendly job creation strategies. While her opponent claims to favor lower business taxes and support small business, he has faithfully backed Ed Rendell’s deficit spending and votes in favor of small businesses only 25% of the time, according to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). That’s why both the NFIB and PA Business Council have endorsed Joyce Haas, the best choice to help turn around Pennsylvania’s economy.

The full text of Joyce’s responses can be found below:

What is the biggest challenge for Pennsylvania and what will you do about it?

Joyce Haas: Before tackling the looming pension crisis, we must first lower unemployment and grow Pennsylvania’s economy. This is a critical challenge, but not as daunting as it sounds.

With its wealth of natural resources, central location among the nation’s urban hubs, and some of America’s smartest, hardest workers, our Commonwealth should be a destination point for job-creating businesses. We simply need new leadership with fresh perspective. I will oppose efforts to stunt responsible natural gas extraction in the Marcellus Shale. We are blessed with a resource that could bring previously unimaginable opportunity and prosperity to areas where people are struggling, like Philipsburg locally. My opponent recently voted with big-city politicians for the nation’s highest gas tax. I believe we must welcome and nurture this unique opportunity, not chase companies away with high taxes. That is the old, tax-first mentality of the last eight years that created the problem.

What was the top achievement and the biggest disappointment of Gov. Ed Rendell’s eight years in office?

Joyce Haas: As a former teacher, I believe the governor deserves credit for his continued support for early childhood education. Despite cutting education funds elsewhere, he always prioritized these important programs.

However, there have been many disappointments: the political pay-for-play culture that has dominated Harrisburg for the last eight years, refusal to follow through on Gov. Tom Ridge’s plan to phase out the capital stock and franchise tax, and his failure to pass a single state budget on time. Perhaps the greatest, though, has been the out-of-control spending that saddles future generations with crippling debt. Rendell spent like he had a blank check from taxpayers. As a member of the Appropriations committee, my opponent was with Rendell every step of the way, voting for bloated budgets that ballooned the state’s deficit. Thanks to Rendell’s and Conklin’s irresponsibility, Pennsylvania’s elected officials now face difficult, but necessary decisions to protect the future of the commonwealth.

Will you vote to raise taxes in 2011?

Joyce Haas: No.
